Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal has done a wonderful graph correlating belief in a higher power with scientific education.
It also provides a great way to remind you all that I am still conducting my survey into whether scientists are more likely to be atheists than non-scientists and the affect on belief of growing up in a religious household. If you haven’t taken part, please do.
… you blame the earthquake in Haiti on the Haitian people making a “pact with the devil”
Yes, Pat Robertson, you are the asshole of the highest order.
If you had an ounce of compassion in your body you would be using your TV appearance to call on your followers to help the Haitian people rather than saying that they deserved the horrible natural disasters that have befallen them.
This is one of those times I wish that God was real so that when a bastard like Pat Robertson goes up to Heaven, God can bitchslap him to Hell for being a despicable human being.
The Pope has taken crazy to a whole new level with his recent statements on gay marriage. The Pope has been quoted as saying:
Creatures, including humans, “can be protected or endangered”, the Pope, 82, told the Vatican diplomatic corps in a traditional January address focusing mainly on environmental issues.
“One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes,” he said, citing “certain countries in Europe or North and South America”..
Really?? Allowing same-sex marriage to occur is going to kill off the human race? Are you kidding me?
It isn’t like us queers are going around having heterosexual sex and breeding until countries finally enter the 21st century and legally recognise our relationships. Allowing same-sex relationships to be legally recognised is not going to destroy the human race, but the more people who see the Bible and the Catholic Church as not reflecting the world they live in, the more likely they will be to turn away from the Church. This is what I think the Pope is really afraid of.
Count me in for bringing the downfall of this irrelevant institution.
The Golden Compass or Northern Lights, as the book was titled in the UK and Australia, is the first book of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series. It has now been made into a film, which opens in Australia on Boxing Day. I have seen the original trailer and thought it looked fairly impressive, but that was nothing compared to the final trailer that has now been released that features the daemons!
I am having a total geek out moment here. Wow, just wow!

I am just so impressed with the standard of the CGI in these clips.
I am a little disappointed to hear that they have watered down the religious elements to this film and am wondering how the plot is going to hold together with those being removed. The Religious Right are already protesting about this film – I wonder how upset they would have been if the book’s plot and themes were accurately reflected in the film. Still it is going to get kids interested in reading the books, so all is not lost.
BTW, the film and books are not anti-religion, they are anti-dogma and anti-religious power wielding maniacs – positions of thought that I subscribe to.
Anyway, this is not a post about a religion, this a post about what looks to be an incredible film that everyone should drag as many members of their family and social circle to see.
