Science Toys For Kids

It’s that time of the year where parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles are all hitting the shops to find Christmas gifts for the children in their lives.  But what do you buy for the budding young scientific genius in the family to further inspire them to keep asking why?

Here are a list of fantastic science gifts for young scientists of all ages that you may not have known existed.

Ages 0-4

Yes, there are scientific gifts for toddlers!

Check out Nerdy Baby for some truly awesome science gifts for babies and toddlers by Tiffany Ard.  My favourite are the Nerdy Baby ABCs and 123s.  Any flash card set that includes B is for binary code and the number Pi is a massive hit with me.

Also from Nerdy Baby is a picture book for your toddler who is obsessed by theoretical physics called Pat Schrodinger’s Kitty.  It is a book that adults will find just as entertaining as the kids do.

Ages 4 -8

For kids who are starting to learn about animals, you can’t go pass Evolvems.  These cute and cuddly highly interactive toys teach kids all about evolution as they evolve the animals from one species to another. The toys also contains a link to a website where kids can take play online games and read comics about evolution.

For kids who like biology, there is Plush Guts that stock plushy toys of all the body’s major organs like the brain, intestines, kidneys and gallbladder.  They also stock some very cute baby and kids t-shirts as well.

Ages 8 – 12

To help foster critical thinking and to teach children how to decipher fact from fiction, there are some great books now available that teach logic and reasoning in a way that kids find fun.

Check out:

Nibbling on Einstein’s Brain: The Good, The Bad and the Bogus in Science by Diane Swanson

Maybe Yes, Maybe No: A Guide For Young Skeptics by Dan Barker

Sasquatches From Outer Space: Exploring the Weirdest Mysteries Ever by Tim Yule

Great Mythconceptions: The Science Behind the Myths by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki

Also by Dr Karl is Dr Karl’s Fact or Fishy which is a fast paced scientific trivia game where players can answer some fun science questions or  guess if the “fact” read out is indeed a fact or if it is a bit fishy.

If there are any other outstanding science gift ideas for kids that you know of, please let me know so I can keep adding to this list.
