Birthday Bash

Last night was Mel and Fiona’s 30th birthday bash. They manage to get a function room at Kelly’s on King (an Irish pub), and it was a fantastic venue. Two pool tables, our own bar, heaps of tables and chairs and TV screens showing the Olympics, plus good music. Definitely a venue we must have another party at. At 11pm, Lela, Sherene and I departed the party to watch the Australia versus USA women’s basketball gold medal decider. We could have watched it at the party, but we were all tired and wanted our basketball with commentary. It was a gripping game, with the lead changing all the time, but unfortunately, our girls just couldn’t beat them. Poor Lauren Jackson was having a shocking night at the basket, only scoring 8 points where her usual average per game is around 25. However, Penny Taylor and Kristy Harrower were on fire. Harrower is only 5’4, is the smallest player at the Olympics and yet somehow she is always getting rebounds, and has an impressive 3 pointer percentage. The referring was absolutely pathetic. When Taylor is tripped over by a US player and gets a travel called on her instead of a foul on the US player, you know there is something not right going on. These types of calls really dogged the Opals and left Taylor is real foul trouble, so much so, it shut her down for the 4th quarter. Still our girls had an impressive Olympics and will come back stronger in Beijing in 2008.
